When the current owners bought this beautiful old farmhouse, it had last been sold in 1762 and was uninhabitable. They wished to preserve the ‘time capsule’ historic feel, while updating it for modern living. The judges were particularly impressed by the detailing and craftsmanship which went into this restoration, using natural, recycled and locally sourced materials. A great deal of attention has been given to insulation and fireproofing – beneath the fourth-storey roof, between floors and in the walls. All windows are double- or triple-glazed. The reversal of previous poor alterations and the clever reuse of outbuildings really lift the whole scheme.

Overall this is an intelligent piece of conservation which brings the house into the present while honouring its past
